Planning on getting that game. efuse = efailSo the Droid X is awesome. I really want(ed) one. I saw Jakes and it's teh sexy. Nice screen ( unless this happens) and specs. No Android 2.2 at launch, but that's easy enough to fix right? No it's not. WTF was Moto thinking? Lets try to lock down the rev of the OS on our new phone and alienate the people who helped save us from circling the drain. Morons. I'm sure that someone will find a way around the encrypted boot loader, someone may have already. But this is just so lame for any android device maker to pull. Thanks for going against the values of the community rtards. I agree with pretty much everything JC said here, except that I wasn't upset enough about it to withhold from purchasing the Droid X. Mostly because I knew stuff like rooting happens so quickly. Almost there...

It's a war that will not be won. there will always be fragmentation; it's in the very nature of the OS.
2.2 isn't out on any new devices and they're already tooting the 3.0 horn.

^ that's so wide open that I won't even take the pot-shot. I . . . . no I'll let this go also. I'm sorry did I stun both of you into silence by not being a fanboi? I like my phone os but I can also see the problems for what they are. I do not blindly follow the rest of the lemmings off the cliff. Sorry to disappoint.

fury.com/2010/09/the-first-step-to-fixing-the-android-marketplace-has-nothing-to-do-with-the-android-marketplace/This is by Kevin Fox the lead designer of Gmail and Google Calendar and I actually agree with him on this. If Android wants to sell more apps (which will draw more developers) they need to clean up the launcher. My brother was excited that 2.2 finally combined the different calendars. I'm not convinced though that the iPhone should create a workbench style screen. I appreciate people wanting to read the temperature but I don't see the value of checking the degrees fahrenheit with the same frequency I check the time.

Me, I'd rather customize my first screen/ui/launcher (whatever you call it) with info and notifications I find to be relevant for me. 'course, that's just me. I'm sure you're fine being told what's relevant for you.

oh sure I think that is great. You'll have to show me again what you get because every time I get into these types of conversation the only difference is weather.

The weather widget is neat and I use it on my home screen, but it's not the sales pitch for launcher/WE. I'm already sold on being able to customize the information I need at a glance on my phone mind you. And I only recently found out the the iPhone doesn't have a home screen. And I can see how the weather, or the last text someone sent you, or your last 4 tweets are underwhelming having gotten along without a place for these things before.
The calendar it the seller. I've got the next few items on my calender available to review as soon as I unlock my phone. I honestly don't know how anyone in the corporate world could see this as a minor thing. It's huge to be able to see what's coming in my day at a glance without launching an app.
We can argue about iphonevsandroidvswinmo until we're blue in the face. But not having the option of a launcher on the iphone is a weakness no matter how you spin it.

So tell me (not a Android user but I stayed in a Holiday Inn once) what are the benefits of the launcher? I ask because what Kevin wrote and what I've seen from my brothers Android use (I being the one who has to do the tech support on the device) the launcher indeed hides a lot of functionality from the normal user since the home screen becomes the living area.

Now, taking the side of 'normals', I think Remy makes a good point. (we were just talking about it in the Office). Some people will see what's in the launcher and assume that's it. Those people will miss out on a lot of functionality *possibly.
It's like winmo devices. My UI has shortcuts on the main screen along with whatever else I wish. If I want to dive deeper, I just go to /programs. I think what the author of that article (and Remy) are trying to say is that they think it's more simple to lay everything out where it is rather than organizing it in more than one location by using shortcuts or launchers. Doing so makes you fully aware of installed programs where you could be selling yourself short if you only rely on the shortcuts.
So. IOS organizes everything in one location. Fine.
Android/WinMo store everything in one location but allow for shortcuts to be created and placed in a launcher or wherever by the user. Offering more than one level of organization.
IOS users think it's dumb because it's not simple, Android users think it's great because they can more easily customize their shiz.
It boils down to the fundamental differences between the OS's. Frankly, I've heard all of this before with WinMo. The very same arguments for how WinMo 6.5 is awesome and sucky are the same arguments for Android. If you want to compare anything to IOS wait for windows phone 7 since it takes all the customization options out of the picture leaving Android as the enthusiast device just like WM 6.5 has been.
Android; It's like WinMo, only with apps.
