So now that the Droid X has the same antenna problem I expect a no recommendation from CR. Plus a press conference and free case.

So now that the Droid X has the same antenna problem I expect a no recommendation from CR. Plus a press conference and free case. Even from the video, it's obvious it's not "the same antenna problem" as the iPhone 4. iPhone 4 wasn't just dropping bars, it was dropping calls. Plus, the furor about iPhone antennas was started by its customers, not a competitor (tech blogs may have fanned the flames, but it was real issue that real iPhone owners were seeing). Apple testing and posting videos of competitors' phones is extremely petty. I was able to somewhat replicate the issue at my house over the weekend (one time, one bar dropped off), but I've tried intermittently here at work (with case off and on), and I can't get even a single bar to drop. Once, I got an extra bar after holding it in the "death grip". This is a nothing issue, brought up by Apple in an ill-advised attempt to save face. The fact that I had to search through Engadget for 10 minutes to find the video (I can't find it on CNET or Wired at all anymore) tells me that the "problem" has no traction in the real world.

It's kinda fun to see you make the same arguments I did two weeks ago.

It's kinda fun to see you make the same arguments I did two weeks ago. The only similarities between our statements is that we can't reproduce the issue described on our respective phones. However, Titahn and Atrestra could reproduce the issue on their iPhone 4s. You said media companies were blowing the iPhone antenna issue out of proportion. The initial reports came from actual iPhone users, though, and the continued reports were also from iPhone users. The Droid X antenna issue? A classic case of Apple against the world. Nobody using the Droid X in the wild reported any reception issues. It was Apple, a competitor of Motorola, that brought this up. I envision Apple trying pell-mell to demonstrate any signal degradation in any competitor's phone. They managed to show some bars disappear on a Droid X (with Sasquatch for a hand model, no less. That is a 4.3 inch screen! That guy makes the phone look tiny), and only now is there any remote question about antenna performance on the Droid X. It's two days after Apple released their accusation, and there's barely a blip on the radar about Apple's video on any site that I frequent. Mind you, Apple got a video of two bars dropping from the Droid X while holding the phone. The complaints against the iPhone 4 were of dropped calls and data - a much more serious problem. My prediction: this accusation by Apple will be shown to be an a non-issue, and this will be mostly forgotten in a week. Cases and news conferences will not happen because these "problems" are not remotely on the same level.

This will be a non issue because the media and users have finally realized that antenna issues don't matter. That the iphone 4 antenna is a non issue for 98.3% of the over 3 million owners and the Droid X antenna problem will not be a issue because nobody is talking or caring about the phone in general.

So now that the Droid X has the same antenna problem I expect a no recommendation from CR. Plus a press conference and free case. 99% + of the products in the world get no recommendation from CR, so I'd bet your wish is already granted. If you're looking for special mention of the X's lack of recommended status I think we need to recreate the situation completely. CR needs to want to give the X a recommendation but decide not to because of a flaw. I don't think that's going to happen. CR clearly loves the iPhone they were hurt personally by antennagate. You can hear it in that video. They on the other hand have no love or passion for android or winmo phones and so you're never going to get a specific calling out of their issues. Maybe the iLovers should stop kicking someone with a clear love for the iphone that felt betrayed by the turtle necks lies and start taking a look at yourselves. Maybe start a iphones across America campain. But make sure you plan that event well because you sure as shit aren't going to all get reception from one coast to another.

The point is, pushed by a bitter Gizmodo, who was caught with there hand in the cookie jar, the very non issue antennagate was push to levels of sheer insanity. You talk about the cult of the fruit, all I saw was the cult of ihate jumping on board the ship as fast as they could. CNN got caught up in it, thishelpdesk was caught up in it and CR got caught up in it. And when all the smoke cleared and no phones were return and 77% of iPhone owners would buy another the ihaters moved on to talk how petty it is for Apple to point out the flaws they share with other phones.
So I say this. I don't care what phone you have. It causes me no pain when android or windows comes out with a new feature nor does it lite some deep burning to preach droidhate, but I'll happily defend my choice of phone all day.

you know.. I gotta say it; Remy was right.
We argued for weeks about this reception thing and the more info that's coming out the more I'm siding with his initial assessment of the antenna issue. Sure the iPhone's design makes it easier to lose reception, but a lot of phones have a similar problems when gripped (albeit, not as sever, but similar non-the-less).

But the issue I had with the whole situation is still very real. Apple did, does and probably will continue to handle this badly. Everything apple does reminds me of a socially awkward nerd. Big talk about how perfect they are, can never accept when they are wrong and shift blame anywhere they can to avoid looking like they didn't know something. Antenna gate proved all of that, again.

Big talk about how perfect they are, can never accept when they are wrong and shift blame anywhere they can to avoid looking like they didn't know something. Antenna gate proved all of that, again. Which is why the Fruit is so easy to pick on. I've said it before, but I think Apple is to a point where it cannot control perception like it has been able to in years past. You see, my theory is that Apple's perception was largely managed by the cult-of-itself. The fanatics were, fanatic in professing their love and somehow the superiority of everything Apple. They made their opinions known to all and because of the relatively small market, the overall perception of the Apple brand was managed by the cult-of pretty easily. The average consumer never really had any view of flaws within the brand. It's because of this cult-of's power over their relatively small user base, the Fruit could maintain it's holier-than-Microsoft (and everything else) perception with the masses. More market penetration introduces people who aren't in the cult-of. Little by little, that near-perfect perception is replaced with the facts that OSX has it's lock-ups, problems, vulnerabilities and compatibility problems; their products are actually NOT perfect, and (in some opinions) are actually taking advantage of the consumer; their computer hardware is merely mediocre, not as the cult-of lead you to believe etc. etc. etc. And this near-perefect perception starts to crack into reality. Like what I believe is happening now. The more popular Apple becomes, the more apparent it's niche-based business plan is and it will sink back to into that niche unless it can somehow overcome these kind of problems with growth. And yeah, I love it. I Love to iHate.

I agree Apple is Apple no question, but that is what it takes to bring the great stuff that they do. Google is a odd ball company and same was Microsoft. All of them arrogant to the core and that is what I love. It takes a different view from everybody else to create the next best thing.
