Wait what? The netbook failed? While Notebook sales stayed roughly the same from 2008 to 2009 netbook sales doubled from 16 million to 32million. ... heh, nice. we both thought of the same things at the same time. BTW, I REALLY love this thread!! Well, any argumentative thread, really. I just dig a good argument when it forces me to break down my own thoughts/opinions and take sides. The Forums have been lacking a good fight for a while now. EDIT: The idea of Apple being this huge juggernaut that drives change is a myth. QFT

I posted this early but not sure if you read it. Shows that Amazon might be a little more then miffed that Apple has entered the market. www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2010/01/amazon-macmillan-an-outsiders.html Apple totally brings in change 1. The personal computer with the mouse interface 2. They help kill the floopy. 3. Personal music with the iPod forcing the music industry to change their business model 4. The iPhone changing how people consume the internet I know that Apple was not the first to do any of these things but I look at like Ajax and blogging. Ajax is a different way of using javascript that allowed people to think of the internet as a desktop which has allowed Google to enter that market. Blogs are not the first website and the tech behind them is not new but they are the first to format themselves in a way that allowed millions of people to start generating content and connect starting the social web movement. Adding a little button to the side of a phone is nothing new but when that button allows me to silent my phone in meetings/church vibrating to let me know that it work without me ever looking at it is revolutionary. Apple has a history of being revolutionary. In the Apple TV they were not. The iPad who knows but from what I see I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. This was a fun quiz to take www.fastcompany.com/article/quiz-are-these-comments-about-2001-ipod-or-2010-ipad?page=0%2C0

The idea of Apple being this huge juggernaut that drives change is a myth. QFT OK, I need to clarify this. Remy's right in that Apple has indeed been a real driving force for change a lot in the industry. I QFT'd this in the context of the iPad and how I do not think it will force the Internet to change it's infrastructure, as in force all websites to exclude Flash, etc.

And I'll clarify my netbook comment. I believe it has failed trying to bridge the gap between smartphone and laptop but is succeeding as a device. These clarifications come from the fact that p00p and I had a hug and a good cry in the office this morning. Wish you all could be there

These clarifications come from the fact that p00p and I had a hug and a good cry in the office this morning. Wish you all could be there You two are funny. The borg taught us one thing, resistance is futile... Some post mention that the MAC is already an appliance, I thought the same before I owned one. People who don't understand the inner-workings of devices assume them to be a simple appliance or magical devices. The ipad is the same. We still don't' know enough about it and are only assuming the worst for a device that is still months away from release and years away from being perfected. There are more than enough people on the planet to support the use of all these devices it's getting to the point where I even use an OS based on my mood today i am in W7 just cuz. Yesterday I was in OSx and tomorrow I'll be in bolg os... I already have computers that are technically all-in-one devices but I use them as appliances. Media center, game rig, work laptop, and my general use home desktop. I plan to get hols an IPAD to be a ebook/internet device it will be perfect for her as a third device since she does not want a smart phone. As for me, I'll get one when it has hand writing or I'll just get another Windows tablet.

One aspect I think was forgotten here. Using the iphone os on the ipad was a no brainer decision, time to market and usability of the ipad are much faster this way.
A new os would have taken more time to develop and harden at the customers expense, with a version 3 iphone os they had a stable starting point, which allows the product to launch faster, and be less buggy.
OSX was not so smooth when it was released, flashy and graphical yes but not smooth, people swore by os 9 at the time because of this. It took a few revisions and people finally caught on.
This product will launch with something people can already use, and something stable. Seems like a very good business decision.

All true Phrost, but it's not a revolution. It's not new and exciting magic. It's a giant ipod touch. And I know that Remy and 50k other people will love it for mlb. It will find buyers and make apple money. But it's nothing new really and it's not going to change computing and turn X on it's ear. As it was stated earlier in this thread it is an appliance. And for me it's to limited (based on what we've been told so far) to excite me at all. And based on the fact that 30+ million netbooks sold in the last year there are alot of people like me.
