Ok, so does the Droid version of Android have built in advertising like the Nexus 1? I've ran the latest nexus 1 build on my phone for a couple days and I can't get over how it begs me to call some dumb singles line everytime I pull up the task manager.
I mean, I can understand it built into free apps, but the OS? Adds on websites, on public apps, I get it, I understand. But on my private phone!? Really? You're going to shove advertising in my face ALL of the time?
Maybe I'd get used to it, but I'm pretty sure I'd still hate it. A lot.
:edit: I just noticed that it's a cooked-in app called 'Advanced Task Killer Free'

:edit: I just noticed that it's a cooked-in app called 'Advanced Task Killer Free' Yeah, before you added that edit, I was surprised and confused by your complaint. I have used Task Killer and it's a standalone app that it looks like someone added to the ROM you're using.

Yeah, I totally missed that. -apologies for my noobness. I just assumed the rom would be standard but forgot the cooks at XDA-developers like to, well, cook. It really hit me negatively though. Having my phone tell me "#1 Mobile Text Chat! Join now!" still leaves me with a sense that my phone is not my own.
That said, how do you like the ad features? I don't use adblock on anything but my server (which is down for a day or two, fyi). I figure blogs and webpages I visit deserve an ad-click or two. So the concept shouldn't be too difficult for me to swallow but it is.
I've only used it for hours at a time though. They're still working on the port. BT, most sounds, GPS, camera and Opengles don't work. I'll be able to form a better opinion once I can run it 100%. The apps run surprisingly well considering they're being rendered through software atm. The app store is more smooth than the current M$ Store (surprise, surprise).
So my first impressions of Android are overall, pretty darn good! (yes, you heard me right) Too bad the biggest problem with Open Source is it being Open. I hope that the Android community doesn't segregate itself into oblivion.

So the concept shouldn't be too difficult for me to swallow but it is. I'm not sure what you mean here. The presence of ads in apps has been minimal. I think the usual business model has been light versions for free, or pay versions with more features. As far as online, there've been rumblings of Firefox for Android for some time. That should eventually bring an adblock opportunity to the browser, if that's what you mean. Too bad the biggest problem with Open Source is it being Open. I hope that the Android community doesn't segregate itself into oblivion. I understand your concern here. As Remy has pointed out many, many times, this is probably the Achilles' Heel of Android. I think Google almost immediately took a stronger guiding position with Android than they initially intended to. Its openness will always allow for smaller branches and schisms, but I anticipate there will always be the main branch of Android as cultivated by Google. I see the iPhone world as impressive but stagnant - maybe sterile is a better word. The Android culture seems alive (L. Acidophilus!) and always growing. It's all about perspective, so I admit I could be way off on that, but discussing the Android platform gets me pretty pumped.

I use task killer and almost don't notice that ad's. I'm glad that this guy can make a 1/4 of a cent on me when they do come up, but that's a set it and forget it app for me so I only ever see it when I reboot.
I've got one or two other apps that I've used that had ad's. They just don't really register to me. I see them at first is a "oh hey an ad" moment but then it's gone. The important thing for me so far is that I have not seen an ad that looked like a function of the app, no one is trying to trick me into clicks yet.

HTC EVOGizmodo ReviewFeature set comparision of EVO Nexus and DroidThis phone stomps a mud hole in pretty much everything. 4.3 inch screen, 1gig snapdragon cpu, 1gig on board storage, 512ram, micro sd for 32gig additional storage, an HD 8mp camera (1280x720 video recording) with a forward facing 1.3mp for video conferencing, HDMI out, Wifi Hotspot, Flash support, the first 4g phone... The fact that it's an android 2.1 phone is just gravy as far as I'm concerned. When the nexus launched I had a little envy, but I still love my Droid. This phone is making me seriously jealous. Edit: Kick Stand! It's interesting to me that my phone still has the highest resolution screen on the market.

^ I've been reading about that beast. It's specs are pretty insane, I love how tech is speeding back up where it was fairly stagnant the last several years. Now, I want a phone that will decode and stream my blu-ray rips, that would be RAD. (and make believe)
The 4g would ROCK, but not with Android unless they have a tethering app that you don't have to pay extra $ for on top of your already 'unlimited' data plan. I think tethering is probably my #1 feature for why I'll will stick to winmo until I'm forced out. Having dsl speed connection to your laptop wherever is pretty much a basic for me. -the downside with winmo is I'm missing out on all the cool apps out for Android and iPwn.
I wonder how people will like the 4.3 inchers. The HD2 winmo phone is that size and people are finding it a bit awkward. I'm not sure how I'd like a phone that size until I had it to play around with.
BTW, your extra x54 pixels of screen is definitely a nice bonus. /jealous

PDA Net does free tethering. The basic app is free also, for HTTPS they want you to buy it for 30 bucks.
I've had to use my phone to connect for on call. Quite literally a life saver.

From You know the all powerful and glorious Droid* was released in Q3 09, I wonder if that's related to this line graph. Weird. But seriously I'm getting all these articles linked to me today explaining why Android sales mean nothing to the iphone. I personally don't care to much how popular my phone OS is. Popular enough to continue being upgraded and to have apps made for it, but that's about it. What I don't get is the apparent fear of the android OS alot of these fruit lover iphone bloggers have. If you love your iphone for it's hardware and software why do you care who is selling the most? Maybe for some it's a fashion thing and they are starting to worry that their iphone is not going to be the thing all the cool kids are wearing next season. *lolzor

:ahem: It's no surprise that Android is selling well in unit shares. .. it's a new OS and there are several phones that are using it and it's on many carriers and it was released in the middle of the iPhone life cycle.
That said, this chart doesn't really give us a good enough idea to see if the Android trend will continue. Short-term numbers like this can be easily interpreted as anything you'd like them to be. Apple's been through several iterations with the iPhone, and most people know the new version will be coming out this summer. -That's reason to *not* buy an iPhone in the last Q4 and Q1.
The real test for Android will be seeing the numbers beyond it's current honeymoon stage and if the trend continues so. There simply isn't enough data to calculate if Android is a viable threat to the Fruit just yet.
Although, I have to say, the numbers are encouraging for teh Droid-heads!

android is on more carriers, and more handsets, easy to see why its ahead. what i don't understand is why its more popular than windows ht sense etc. The linux phone never worked, but when you hide linux behind the google name all of a sudden people think its awesome, that and the fruity hate helps drive sales They must be running 2.2 with the new flash on that nexus one? A guy at work has the incredible and it doesn't run that site as good
