Win7 is pure WIN as far as I'm concerned. I'm smitten, smitten hard. The minute RC1 is found, it's on all of my computers.

So typical windows gaming issue. You video card driver crashes.
Win98 - BSOD
Win2k - Hang then BSOD
WinXP - Hang, maybe you can use keyboard commands to shut the process down or safly turn off the PC, but probab ly it's a hard boot.
WinVista - Hang and maybe the driver restarts and you can get back to the desktop, game is toast though.
Win7 - Screen goes blank but you can get to the desktop where it tells you it was the driver. The driver recovers. You tab back into the game and the game recovers.
Win7 FTW!

I have 3 preordered Home premiums from Amazon (no shipping and no tax). .. this could be the first OS I actually pay money for. (I have a few legit copies of Vista, but they were all from their feedback program that they gave away)
Also the first official 'crack' for the RTM came out (build 7264) and works fine so far... I think Windows 7 is a HUGE and AWESOME step forward for computing.
I haven't had a problem with my main desktop that i've upgraded from VIsta to a couple beta versions then to RC1 then about 3 versions of RC1 and i'll put RTM on it this week all upgrading.. not one single clean install... and still no problems.
I'm sure a clean install would prolly make it a little faster, but I'm not sure and don't care.

So p00p can you think of a reason to run Pro over Home?
I'm trying to find all the lists of differences I can but nothing I find is very detailed. I'm a little unclear on the RDP functionality of Home will be. My guess is that Pro will have group policy manager that Home will not. I've read that Home Starter is getting it's 3 app limit lifted. Hopefully Microsoft will release more info soon.

RDP is the only thing that draws me towards Professional, but it's not worth $50. I'm pretty sure they'll come out with an RDP hack like they did for Home Premium. heck, I doubt I'll even install any of my copies of Home P, but i'll have them just in case M$ get's tricky.

we use ubuntu on to analyze terabytes of genome data at work, 2-4 TB data sets takes like 4 days to process, and the software needs like 16gb of ram, so nuts! I'll get a name of the software tommorow!

(Like Folding@home)

(Like Folding@home) No, it's a 3rd party GPL application, and does not support GPU processing, Not sure why I used ubuntu, I think it just happened to already be installed on that workstation. The software could run on W7 with Cygwin. If we get funding it's going on a new OS X server, and I got the okay from the art department to use their MAC computer lab as part of an X-GRID! My next computer lab upgrade will be Mac pros which are dual booted, the research labs will be able to utilize them to run data sets over night instead of a week on one machine. That's my grand plan well see how it all shapes up! VelvetThe commercial versions are designed to work with a genome analyzer system so they cost a lot more and typically only come with the hardware purchase, which we may get if another grant is accepted! We are just analyzing the data gathered from another lab across campus for so the GPL software is great for now. Almost forgot, the point of all this is to find a cure for cancer in fact 4 of our 10 research labs here all work on various parts of the cure for cancer research! makes me feel good to know I am helping with that daily. Sorry for the thread derail, Windows 7 is cool I still need to test the media center part.

I got my 'House Party kit' yesterday, pretty interesting. If I wasn't clear down in Happy Valley I'd use it as an excuse for a LAN party. It's a bit of a busy month for that though. Anyway, one interesting note about Win7 is the 'upgrade anytime' function. I tested it last night and upgraded my HTPC from Home Premium to Ultimate. It took literally 5 minutes. 5 minutes for over a hundred dollars worth of difference. Crazy or ridiculous? </necro>
