This is one of the few good things I've seen out of the land of the fruit. Content providers (movie, tv, music and books) have been raking in unbelievable profits and crying poor for a long time. Personally I think 99cents a show is to high for a rental still (you can get a movie rental for that) but it's closer to reasonable.
The Apple TV device itself is a joke though. Only outputs 720p? WTFever!

Tell you what. I'll bring my Apple TV to the next lan party. Pull it out of my pocket and we can connect it to the tv and have the kids watch netflix or just stream movies from our iphones with AirPlay. They can quietly entertain themselves in that awful 720p and your welcome to WTFever the night away. (response to troll comment)
99 cents seems fair to me. If I rent all the episodes that comes up to $24 which is $10 to $20 less then buying the season. This is just another example of companies crying foul when the market changes.

OR you just DVR the episodes when they come out and save enough money to buy something of substance rather than spend cash on something that's free.
OR you just rent the series from netflix or watch them online through their TV websites instead?
Maybe it's just the cheapskate in me but I'm pretty sure that all of this is part of the fruit-filled plan to nickle and dime you straight into the poor house.

How much does a person spend to DVR these things? Nikki and I got rid of cable entirely and went to Netflix because I figured sticking with cable/satellite and getting a DVR would cost much more.

^ You know, that's a good question.
Between the HDHomerun and the internal tuner (excluding the cost of the computer) I think I'm in for around $175. Cable is part of my HOA so I get it discounted i guess. But normal comcast packages are $20-$30 a month. $60-80 for premiums.
That's what, 40 shows a month on an apple TV? Let's take Thursdays. I like tv on Thursdays. NBC alone, I record 5 shows. it would cost $40 to watch just thursdays on an Apple TV for a month. .. i'm sure i could break it down further but you get the point. And I'm not even talking about live tv options which have a more subjective value.
BUT in the end, do what's best/convenient/frugal. The $.99 an episode thing is straight up highway robbery if you ask me.

Apple has surprisingly caused the value of the dollar to be hot subject lately be it the songs, apps or tv shows. Plus I hope nobody is renting all their TV. So here is the order of things at our house. DVR, Netflix, Hulu, Rent/Buy the series. So in that 4th tier and yes there are shows that fit in there(Castle season 2), Apple fills in that spot cheaper then buying the series. Now granted I bought the XFiles for $160 a season when it first came out. $.99 is tooth fairy money.

I’m with Poop on this one, I think a buck per episode is too much for something you could have seen for free. At a buck an episode for a show like 24 that has 24 episodes that is $24 for the season to rent. For about $3 more I can buy it on DVD and always have it. I can rip it and convert it to iPhone format or whatever I want to watch it on. Sure that is extra work, but I own a solid copy of the show and can watch it whenever I want to and that is a much added value to me. So why am I basically paying the full price of buying a TV show on DVD to only rent it in Fruit Format? That doesn’t make sense to me. Would you rent a movie for $20? Why is TV different? Why does something that is aired for free end up costing more? Why is a 1 hour or 30 min show the same price as a 3 hour movie? I think you were getting to the reason when you mentioned that Apple has caused the value of a dollar to be a hot topic. They are making people think, “it’s only a buck” but those dollars are adding up fast. Apple is making bank off their $.99 songs, tv shows, movie rentals, apps, etc. I guess that is fine, people should be allowed to make money and stuff, but for me the value isn’t good enough to use it.

I think Remy has explained it best:
The $.99 an episode thing can really be a great supplementary alternative. If you don't have it DVR'd, can't find it online via the network web page, Hulu or Netflix; rent it from the fruit. At that point, if you still want to watch it I would imagine $.99 would be worth it since it's just not available elsewhere. -(all things excluding the darknets, of course)
You know, that actually makes sense. However, I still think the fruit's master plan is to nickle and dime you 'till you're naked. -Naked with really cool gadgets.

I'm unsure on the owning media atm. One part of me really likes the idea but after buying the SG-1 disks years ago and now I watch them on Netflix while they collect dust I think I may move away from buying physical disks. I don't know. We'll see how I end up.

I still like to own music CD's. When I get them I rip them to 320 bit rate .mp3's and put them on my server. But if my hdd crashes I can rerip the CD and have it again. Also, I am one of those people that like to see cool pictures of the band and see the stuff in the little booklet.

It's just a way to make someone other than me richer. Starwars, Starwars THX, Starwars HD, Starwars 3D and in a few years Starwars Holodeck.
It's like feeding the bears at yellowstone, they will keep coming back for more if you keep giving them your food/money.

Back up your server, then you're good if it goes down. Check out the band's website, you'll find the same info/pics there and more!
