So there I was... listening to World of WarCast when they related the story of a friend who had their account hacked. The friend was the guild leader of Death and Haxes (I know, ironical). The perpetrators quickly set to work kicking everyone out of the guild and then selling off the contents of not only her bank and bags, but also the entire 4 tabs worth of the guild bank. The process to have things restored was almost impossible. At one point her account was perma-banned for "exploiting the game economy". It took many phone calls, emails, pleading, etc. to get the account reactivated, the items restored and things back to mostly normal.
The hosts of the podcast said that everyone should have the authenticator to help protect your account from teh haxz0rs. I've thought about doing it but didn't want that extra annoyance of linking my b.net account to WoW and then having to type in some random number in addition to my password, etc. But after hearing this story I think maybe I should do it. They stressed that guild leaders or anyone with access to the guild bank should have an authenticator. They said, "Don't do it for yourself, do it for your guild."
So I think I'll try it out. I don't need to buy their little keychain authenticator since they've come out with the iPhone app. I'm just a little nervous after hearing other peoples stories about the difficulty in getting the accounts merged together. I've heard that you should not do this on the weekend. Do it during business hours so if you run into problems you can call the Blizzard support.
Has anyone else gone through the account merge process yet and can give any tips? I'll probably do this next Monday.
