I've heard talk before about the ability to build games where you would make a wood crate and tell the game "that crate is made of wood" and it would then behave as such. Weight, density, etc. You could smash it, shoot through it, burn it, etc. You could build a brick wall, concrete wall, steel wall, etc. and just give it the properties of such and it would then behave appropriately. That got me super excited, I'm talking way way excited. That was in 2001.
This technology is very cool. I understand it is quite early on, but you can see the potential for it. But I think it is years away for gaming. And I'm talking years and years away. The reason I say this is; first they are new. They know they are new. They have a long way to go to perfect the system. I think that will take significant time. Second, they are only showing you the graphic ability. They even say they haven't tested all of the different possible model building techniques. The 3D laser tracing or whatever it is called would be a great time saver if they get that working. But still all you have are art assets. You don't have a Game Engine. You have graphics and models. They even say in one of the videos that games need to be fun, not just have pretty graphics. It will take a very long time to build a gaming engine around this tech. Third, they said themselves that they have already come up against strong opposition from industry leaders like ATI and Nvidia, and you say to yourself, "well of course they would oppose them, they want to turn their entire business on its head." But the opposition doesn't stop at graphics card manufactureres. The game developers that are making games already know and love their little triangles. They are working with a system that is tried and true and for their intents and purposes is fast and easy. Because this new system is new there is no knowing how difficult it will be to create art and models, texture, animate, add physics, and bundle it all in a fun, engaging game that people want to play.
I know it sounds like I'm down on the system, but I'm not. I think the demo is pretty amazing and I'm impressed with the "outside of the box" thinking that they have employed in it. I hope that they are able to do something amazing with it. I want to see something incredible happen with PC gaming that pushes it back to the forefront of gaming culture. They mention using the tech on Wii and DS and phones. I hope this doesn't become something for consoles, or if it does that it will at least propel PC gaming as well.
But, either way, I still think we'll be waiting a long time to see it happen.
