It won't die today or tomorrow, but if it doesn't innovate it will become obsolete.
The thing that makes it an easy choice for apple, and for other companies is, if you know it "might" die sooner or later, or technology x won't use it, why build your future on it?
Its proprietary tech that may all of a sudden not get updated, or start charging. Its the same kindof fight thats going on with ogg (sp?) and h.264 firefox vs internet exporer, safari, chrome and what video will be the html 5 standard for video.
In the end this all comes down to companies fighting other companies, and the consumer loosing.

^ Agreed
I wonder if software tech will ever evolve to a stable standard. It was so simple in the plain 'ole HTML days. I mean, look at the last 10 years and how quickly online code/methods/tech has changed, even in just the last few it's changed by leaps and bounds.
Who knows. In the end, I hope the consumers demand the best tech and don't put up with whatever is shoved in their face like the false internet that the fruit company's 'pad is doing.

Just like I don't understand "drinking the coolaid" I don't understand the "fruity" hate. Each company seems to be continuing with their standard mantra. MS got kind of open, now its trying to close it down again, google is still trying to be everywhere, but no where. And apple is still trying to be proprietary niche, just with a bigger niche. Nothing has really changed.

^ You're right, Phr0st. It's pretty much status quo for goog, M$ and teh Fruit. Except now it seems M$ is drifting towards what I loath in the mobile market and that just sucks for me. I hate that the trends are leading away from choice and functionality towards pre-defined boxes. It just seems backwards to me for our day and age. But I guess everyone's idea of progression is subjective and the bulk of the market are normals, so it's understandable that tech would lead towards just that. -I still hate it.
My malice towards Apple is the same as it's always been, I don't dig their horrid iTunes DRM and some of their business practices. In particular to this discussion, Apple's marketing campaign for the 'pad revolves around the 'best internet experience' which, for me, is an absolute farce considering the lack of certain things already discussed. I play up my sarcastic fruit-hate because it's fun to watch any zealot squirm in the face of a good argument.
The kool-aid drinking thing is the coined phrase for those who blindly believe/accept what they're being told rather than make a conscious decision one way or another. They just drink whatever koolaid is put in front of them, poisoned or not (the phrase actually comes form the poisoned koolaid cult thing). More so, I think some of the religious-esque mac fans fall into that category. I mean sure, we all know I'm a fanboy of certain things but at least I can, and frequently do, explain why.
Of course, in the end, we all know that I just like to argue. It's fun!

It was grape flavor aid laced with cyanide.

I did find it surprising/cool that Best buy was able to get the iPad on launch day considering how Apple treated the iPhone. I guess since Best buy have their personal shrine to Apple in each store helps with negotiations. I have already ordered mine though

I have already ordered mine though I'm going to try to find a pointy hat with stars and a wand for Remy to wear once he has the 'pad. Wearing it while using the iPad will give it a better chance to live up to the Fruit's marketing.

I just can't believe Nicolas Cage is still allowed to be in movies.

I'm ok with Nicolas Cage. Really like the National Treasure movies. Hated Ghost Rider.
